Proton VPN Key Features

• Fully open-source. Every Proton VPN app — Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux — is open-source. The code is publicly available on GitHub for anyone to inspect. No other major VPN offers this level of transparency. If a VPN says it doesn’t log your data, you’re trusting their word. With Proton VPN, you can verify it yourself.
• Secure Core. Routes traffic through hardened servers in privacy-friendly countries (Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden) before reaching the exit server. Long-distance performance was the weakest in our test group, with Australia and Japan dropping to 34–39% of baseline. For streaming and browsing, these speeds are more than sufficient. For competitive gaming or large file transfers, NordVPN is the better option.

Privacy & Logging Policy

Privacy is where Proton VPN separates itself from every competitor. No other VPN offers this level of transparency and legal protection:

Jurisdiction: Switzerland. Swiss privacy laws are among the strongest in the world. The country is outside the EU, outside the Five Eyes / Nine Eyes / Fourteen Eyes intelligence alliances, and has constitutional protections for privacy. Swiss courts require a specific Swiss legal order to compel any data disclosure — foreign government requests alone are insufficient.

Logging policy: Proton VPN does not log browsing activity, connection timestamps, IP addresses, session lengths, or DNS queries. The company does not even log your assigned VPN IP address. Account data is limited to email (which can be a ProtonMail address for additional anonymity) and payment method (which can be Bitcoin for cash equivalent).

Open-source verification: Every Proton VPN app is published on GitHub under open-source licences. Security researchers worldwide can — and do — audit the code continuously. Proton VPN’s apps are functional and well-designed, with a distinctive visual identity built around the Secure Core world map. They’re slightly more complex than ExpressVPN’s but offer more power-user features:

Customer Support

Proton VPN’s support is competent but lags behind ExpressVPN and NordVPN in speed and channel availability:

Email support: The primary support channel. We submitted three tickets during testing. Average response time was 12–18 hours — significantly slower than ExpressVPN (3 hours) and NordVPN (6 hours). The responses were detailed and technically accurate, but the wait is noticeable.

Live chat: Available for paid users only. Wait times averaged 5–8 minutes in our tests. Agent quality was good, though one session required escalation for a Secure Core routing question. Free users are limited to email support.

Knowledge base: Comprehensive and well-organized. Includes detailed setup guides for every platform, troubleshooting articles, and explanations of Proton’s security architecture. The content is more technical than most VPN providers — reflecting Proton’s target audience.

Community: Proton has an active Reddit community (r/ProtonVPN) where employees regularly participate. This is a genuine support resource — we found answers to niche questions there faster than through official channels.
