ExpressVPN has long been the premium choice in the VPN market — and the premium price tag to match. At $4.99/month on its longest plan, it costs more than every other VPN on our best VPN list. So the question isn’t whether ExpressVPN is good — it clearly is. The question is whether it’s good enough to justify the extra cost.

We used ExpressVPN daily for two weeks across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. We ran speed tests on five server locations, tested streaming access on six platforms, read the full privacy policy, and contacted customer support three times to evaluate response quality.

The verdict: ExpressVPN delivers the lowest latency of any VPN we’ve tested, the most polished apps, and near-perfect streaming reliability. But the price premium is real, and competitors like NordVPN now match or beat it on most metrics at a lower cost. Here’s the full breakdown.

ExpressVPN Pricing Plans

ExpressVPN is the most expensive mainstream VPN. There’s no budget tier — you’re paying for a premium product regardless of billing cycle:

ExpressVPN Key Features

• Lightway protocol. ExpressVPN’s proprietary protocol, built for speed and reliability. It establishes connections nearly instantly and handles network switches (Wi-Fi to mobile data) without dropping the tunnel. Comparable to NordLynx in performance, with slightly lower latency in our tests.
• TrustedServer technology. All servers run on RAM only — no hard drives. Every reboot wipes all data. This architecture has been independently audited by PwC and Cure53, confirming no persistent data storage.
• Network Lock (kill switch). Blocks all internet traffic if the VPN drops. Available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and routers. iOS and Android have equivalent protection built into their apps.
• Split tunneling. Choose which apps use the VPN and which bypass it. Available on Windows, macOS, and Android. Not available on iOS due to Apple platform restrictions.
• Threat Manager. Blocks trackers and malicious sites at the DNS level. Less comprehensive than NordVPN’s Threat Protection but covers the essentials.

• Router app. ExpressVPN offers a dedicated router firmware (Aircove) that provides whole-home VPN coverage with a simple web interface. You can assign different devices to different server locations.

Speed & Performance

ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol delivers consistently fast speeds with the lowest latency of any VPN we tested. While NordVPN edges it out on raw download speed, ExpressVPN wins on responsiveness — making it the better choice for gaming and video calls.

ExpressVPN retained 84% of our base speed on UK servers. The standout metric is latency — 6ms locally and 71ms to the US are the lowest numbers we recorded across all VPNs tested. If you’re gaming or on video calls, that difference matters.

Privacy & Logging Policy

ExpressVPN has strong privacy credentials, though its corporate ownership adds a layer of complexity worth understanding.

Jurisdiction: British Virgin Islands (BVI). No mandatory data retention laws, and the BVI has no intelligence-sharing agreements with the Five Eyes alliance. Local courts have limited ability to compel data disclosure to foreign governments.

Logging policy: ExpressVPN does not log browsing activity, connection timestamps, IP addresses, or DNS queries. The company explicitly states it cannot identify any user based on their IP address or timestamp. Connection metadata is limited to date of connection (not time), choice of server location, and total bandwidth used — none of which is personally identifiable.

Independent audits: The no-logs policy has been audited by PwC and KPMG. ExpressVPN’s TrustedServer technology was separately audited by Cure53, confirming the RAM-only architecture works as claimed. These are the most thorough third-party audits in the VPN industry.

Kape Technologies ownership: ExpressVPN was acquired by Kape Technologies in 2021. Kape (formerly Crossrider) has a controversial history in the adware space. While ExpressVPN has maintained editorial and operational independence post-acquisition, and audits have continued, this ownership structure concerns some privacy advocates. It hasn’t affected the product’s technical privacy protections, but it’s worth knowing.

Real-world verification: In 2017, Turkish authorities seized an ExpressVPN server during a murder investigation. They found no usable data because ExpressVPN’s no-logs architecture meant there was nothing to find. This remains the strongest real-world validation any VPN provider has received.

• iOS — streamlined interface, includes Threat Manager and ExpressVPN Keys. No split tunneling (Apple restriction, not ExpressVPN’s limitation).
• Android — full feature set with split tunneling, per-app VPN control, and Threat Manager.
• Linux — GUI app available (not just CLI), which is uncommon in the VPN space.
• Browser extensions — Chrome, Firefox, Edge. Controls the full VPN app (not just a proxy), which means all traffic is encrypted.
